The Piecemakers Quilt Guild of Brandon will be hosting Debbie Jones for three upcoming events. Debbie has received several awards, been published many times and has exhibited in numerous art shows and exhibits. She has also tought in Houston and Chicago at the International Quilt Festival - just to name a few. She is from Venice Fl. and will be showing us two of her specialized techniques.

This is a time for you to explore your creative side with one of Debbie’s Classes.

“Fabric Seascape Decollage (April 12, 2008)

Her Fabric Decollage technique is a cross between collage and decoupage. Designs are created by bonding many pieces together in layers using fusibles. No stitching is required, although “thread-painting” or quilting can be added, optionally. She chooses from lots of commercial fabrics, along with airbrushed, batiked, marbled and hand-painted pieces that she has made or collected over the years. Mostly, she uses cotton fabrics, but also adds silks, rayons, ultra suede, metallics and other synthetics. After completing and mounting the result is two-dimensional artwork that resembles a “fabric painting”!

Rubber Stamping on Fabric…and much more (May 24, 2008) This class will show you that you can use the stamps you have in your stash and maybe some of the stamp pads you already have. There will be a variety of techniques demonstrated with a chance to be hands on with all of them.

Carol Doak - Mariner’s Compass Star (Feb 2008)

Carol Doak has greatly influenced the art and craft of quiltingmaking for more than a decade both in the U.S. and internationally. Carol’s lighthearted approach and ability to teach have earned her high marks and positive comments from workshop participants worldwide and at national shows such as the Houston International Quilt Festival and the American Quilter’s Society Show. Ms. Doak taught the Mariner’s Compass to the Piecemakers Quilt Guild of Brandon in February 2008. Class size was limited to 25 people, which allowed personal interaction, guidance, and laughter throughout class.

2008 May Salad Supper - Challenge Quilts Reveiled

The evening started out with the walls filled with splashes of color. Each Quilt had its own personality and depth. The guidelines were as follows:

Piecemakers Quilt Guild of Brandon - Pink Ribbon Challenge 2008

“A Harvest of Hope”

Quilt Size: Length 30-40 inch/ Width 30-40 inch. Entries must be assembled as a traditional quilt sandwich, including a top, batting and back. It be quilted and bound.

Criteria #1: Two “pink” fabrics will be provided to each participant. Entries must use both fabrics provided ON THE FRONT of the quilt.

Criteria #2: Each entry must include a “pink ribbon.” The ribbon may be pieced, appliqued, phototransferred, stenciled, embroidered or any other technique you choose. It may be part of a focus fabric or it may be an actual pink ribbon. However you choose to include the ribbon, it should appear as a primary element of the overall design, no merely an afterthought. The overall design of the quilt should reflect the emotion that pink ribbons have come to symbolize for women.

The Peacemaker Quilt Guild of Brandon has been donating quilts to the Joshua House. Members were encourage to use blight, funky, fun and lively fabrics and patterns for TWIN SIZE QUILT TOPS (most requested size). Quilt Tops are accepted all year round at the monthly meetings. The Quilt Guild will provide the batting, the backing and quilting.

Joshua House

2008 will be a banner year for Joshua House! Expanding services to teen girls with mentoring programs will only make Joshua House shine brighter as Tampa’s most successful program serving children who have been abused, abandoned and neglected.

How it all started?

Fifteen years ago, a group of concerned citizens, dreamed of a safe haven for the abused, neglected and abandoned children in their Tampa Bay Community. After dedicated planning and development their dream was realized in the creation of Joshua House. A place where children could be safe from their demons and heal from their wounds.

Hundreds of children have passed though Joshua House since it opened in 1992. Each story of abuse and neglect is an unique as the child. With FIVE (5) homes on 11 acres, Joshua House promotes growth, stability and support specific to each child’s need. Keeping Sibling groups together is just one of the many ways Joshua House makes a difference.

May Salad Supper

The May Piecemakers Quilt Guild of Brandon meeting will be a potluck salad supper. Each member brings a salad to share. The CHALLENGE Quilts will be on display and the members will vote on the “Best of Show.” This meeting will start at 630pm. (This is earlier than our normal start time).

Hello, everyone! Just a couple of reminders about quilt guild matters….

1. Board meeting Monday at 5:30 p.m. prior to general meeting at 6:30 p.m. Don’t forget to bring:

your challenge quilt in a bag
recipes for the quilt show cookbook
any fees for workshops or retreat
Boutique items (see below)

2. Debbie Jones workshop tomorrow.

3. From Judy DePaul and Cindy Ackroyd: Please complete and bring in any take-home projects. Judy is holding mini-workshops at her home every Tuesday morning, to make things to sell in the Boutique. You won’t believe how many lovely items have already been produced………..the Boutique is going to be a HUGE success, in my opinion.

Needed: Christmas fabrics (small pieces for cutting 3¼” circles) and fat quarters of food fabrics.

Workshops at Judy’s house: April 19 - Lucy Chiacchia will be showing everyone how to make the tote bags using screen material. April 29 - fabric bowls

4. Website news from Brenda Doggett: a rough draft of the website has been completed and they are working on fine tuning the little parts.

Hello, ladies!

Our June meeting is coming up on Monday, so here are a few notices and reminders:

1. Pauline Salzman will present a lecture at our meeting. For anyone who doesn’t recognize the name, she is a very accomplished quilter from Treasure Island; she has had quilts displayed in several prestigous shows (including Houston and Paducah).

2. There is a workshop planned for June 14 at Judy DePaul’s house. The project is a little seasonal tabletopper. You provide the fabric. Sign up and get the project directions at the meeting. Also, please bring in any projects you took home to complete. Work is starting to wind down on Boutique projects. You won’t believe the lovely items that have been produced! (I admit to being very prejudiced on this point!)

3. Bring needle, thread and scissors to the meeting. We will be making yo-yo’s that will be stuffed and strung together to make Christmas wreath ornaments.

4. Bring your sympathy block for Betty Lucas. Directions can be found in the back of the membership directory.

5. The slate of new officers and Board members will be presented for the first time.

6. The Quilt Show rules and registration forms will be available.

Should be a great meeting. Looking forward to seeing all of you.

Hello all!

Just a few reminders about our upcoming meeting on May 12.

Our annual Salad Supper will begin at 6:30 p.m. Officers and board members will bring desserts; everyone else should bring a salad or finger food. The hospitality committee will provide cutlery and beverages. Don’t forget a serving utensil if your dish requires one.

We will be viewing the Challenge Quilts before and during the meeting, then voting for Viewer’s Choice.

Summer Retreat – Thursday, July 31^st – Sunday, August 3^rdat the DaySpring Episcopal Conference Center, Ellenton, Florida. The final (or full) payment is due at Monday’s meeting. There is still time to sign up. The remaining slots will be open to non-guild members following our meeting. If you have questions, please contact Cindy Bailey.

If you have taken home projects for the Boutique, please bring them back. Also, the May workshop will be May 17 and will feature Dani Sawtelle’s tote bag. Fabric will be provided. We just need sewers with their machines and sewing supplies. Sign up at guild meeting.

Our July guild meeting is just around the corner. Some reminders:

1. Election of officers for the upcoming year will take place at our meeting on Monday, July 14.

2. The program will be “A Trip Down Memory Lane.” Claudia Ingram, Nancy Mitchell, Audrey Gantous and Lucelle Monroe will give an overview of how the guild was founded, the history behind our newsletter, and other fun facts.

3. Judy DePaul and Cindy Ackroyd are asking that ALL take-home projects for the quilt show Boutique be returned ASAP. They need these items in order to be able to determine quantities of items to be sold. Even if you are unable to complete the project, please return it; someone else may be able to finish it. Tuesday workdays at Judy’s house continue, though most projects are winding down.

4. Don’t forget your Show and Tell items, the monthly raffle and your name tag!
